Why we’re bringing strength training into our Pilates mix
Hello Everyone,
You all know our golden rule here at Pilates with Graci McArdle: we work, we get a bit tired, we giggle, and repeat! :-)
While we love the laughter and the community, we are also deeply committed to your long-term health. That is why you might have noticed a few more weights and resistance bands slipping into our sessions lately.
Combining Pilates and strength training creates a powerful approach to maintaining health, mobility, and independence throughout life...
Research shows that this combination can help improve bone density, increase muscle strength, support joint health, boost metabolism, and reduce the risk of falls. [1,2,3,4,5]

Supporting Bone Health Pilates provides excellent weight-bearing movement and postural training, while progressive strength training provides the stimulus needed to help maintain and improve bone mineral density. This is particularly important in reducing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures as we age. [1,2,3]
Protecting Your Joints One of the greatest advantages of Pilates is the development of body awareness, alignment, core stability, and movement control. These foundations help you perform strength exercises safely and efficiently, reducing unnecessary strain on joints and lowering injury risk. [1,2]
Boosting Metabolism and Energy Maintaining and building lean muscle mass supports a healthy metabolism, helping the body use energy more efficiently and supporting overall vitality. [1,2,3] Maintaining Independence and Confidence Strong muscles, good balance, and improved coordination help with everyday activities, from carrying shopping bags to climbing stairs and staying active with family and friends. [1,2]
At Pilates with Graci McArdle, our focus has always been on whole-body health, injury prevention, rehabilitation, and long-term wellbeing. Many of you may have noticed that we already combine different forms of resistance during our sessions. One of my favourite methods is integrating resistance bands with hand weights. Research suggests that combining resistance bands with free weights can create what is known as variable resistance. Unlike traditional weights alone, the resistance gradually increases throughout the movement, challenging muscles in a unique way while promoting control, stability, and joint-friendly strengthening. [1,2,3]
This allows us to safely build strength, improve muscle activation, support rehabilitation goals, and continue progressing regardless of age or fitness level. Beyond physical benefits, movement is also one of the most effective tools we have for reducing stress, improving mood, and creating moments of self-care within busy lives. Taking time to move well is an investment not only in your body, but also in your overall well being.
Here at Pilates with Graci It is truly a privilege to support and accompany you throughout your health journey. we work, we get a bit tired, we giggle, and repeat :-) Thank you for allowing me to be part of it.
