Keep Moving, Keep Smiling, with Graci McArdle Pilates & Physio

Summer holidays often change our routine. We travel, spend more time with family, relax a little more and sometimes our regular exercise takes a back seat.
The good news is that keeping your body active doesn’t have to mean following a full workout. Small movements throughout the day can help maintain your strength, flexibility and energy while also lifting your mood.
Even when life doesn’t go exactly as we planned, movement is one of the best ways to take care of both body and mind. Simple ways to stay active every day Turn everyday moments into exercise. • Each time you sit down on the sofa, a chair or the toilet, perform a slow squat instead of simply dropping into the seat. • Before and after mopping the floor, do four lunges on each leg. • While preparing meals, stretch your spine gently to each side using the kitchen worktop for support. Then place both hands on the bench, bend forward from your hips and enjoy a long stretch through your arms, shoulders and back. • While peeling vegetables or waiting for the kettle to boil, slowly rise onto your toes and lower your heels with control to improve balance and strengthen your calves. • Keep your tummy gently switched on during household activities. A light abdominal engagement supports your spine and improves posture. • Sitting or standing, slowly lift one knee at a time while keeping your core engaged. If comfortable, progress by opening and closing your legs in a controlled movement. A little reminder Not every day goes according to plan, and that’s perfectly normal. What matters is finding small moments to care for yourself. A few mindful movements throughout the day can help reduce stiffness, improve your mood and remind you that every little step counts.Stay active, stay positive and enjoy the simple pleasures that each day brings.
